the benefits of baby massage for baby

Writer: Pooja MistryPooja Mistry

Baby massage has become really popular over the recent years but did you know that it has been around for thousands of years?

As a girl, my mum spoke to me about how she used to massage me as a baby, how her mum used to massage her and how it has been a part of our culture for years. Our ancestors understood the benefits of massage on baby's long before modern research allowed the western cultures to understand it. If you haven't yet heard much about it or tried it, then let's break it down the benefits it has for your baby!

BONDING AND ATTACHMENT

The essence of baby massage is to allow uninterrupted, protected time to bond with your baby. Massage is done from the parent to baby to build the connection and love between parent & baby. The act of touch encourages the production of oxytocin, the love hormone which for your baby builds confidence and security. When baby is calm, happy and filled with love, they are more likely to build on their early learning development. It actually helps their brain grow and neurons connect!

CAN AID COLIC

All babies cry, but your baby may have colic if they cry more than 3 hours a day, 3 days a week for at least 1 week but are otherwise healthy.

They may cry more often in the afternoon and evening.

It may also be colic if, while they are crying:

  • it's hard to soothe or settle your baby

  • they clench their fists

  • they go red in the face

  • they bring their knees up to their tummy or arch their back

  • their tummy rumbles or they're very windy

My 3 step routine can be used 3 times at each nappy change to reduce colic in baby.

IMPROVES SLEEP FOR BABY

Sleep is like gold dust when we are new parents and baby always seems to want to be awake as we want to go to sleep (or do something).

Just imagine how you feel when you've been for a massage- I know I'm ready to fall asleep at that table (and I have done many a times- you can ask my therapist!)

My massage techniques help to calm, soothe and relax your baby and aids them to have a longer rest.

HELPS THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Having indigestion or constipation is hard being an adult let alone a little person who has no idea what's happening to their body. And then it's just not fun to hear your baby crying with poop, wind or reflex or anything that's causing them discomfort.

My massage techniques show you ways in which you can support the digestive system and work with your baby to relieve them of any excess gas or trapped wind.

Happy baby= happy parent (& vice versa!)

SOOTHES TEETHING DISCOMFORT

Mumma gently massages baby's foot during a relaxing session, focusing on easing teething discomfort.

I'm sure you’ve heard of many babies who struggle with the sensation of teething and although there can be many store bought self soothers- there’s nothing quite like reflexology!

My massage techniques show you points in your baby’s foot where when you add the right pressure and stroke, you can help relieve your baby from the sensation of discomfort and pain of teething.

INCREASES BODY AWARENESS

Baby's have no idea about their bodies (which is why newborns startle so much!) And it's our job to help them get an understanding of their body.

Our massage techniques focus on different parts of the body each week and gently introduce a new area alongside a familiar one to build their awareness and confidence.

ENHANCES DEVELOPMENT

Baby's are born learner's- they just need help and guidance from their parents. And if you don't know how to support this, that's what I'm here for!

(16 years in Early Years has it's benefits, and this time it's for you to take advantage of it!)

My massage techniques provide a thriving environment for your baby to build on their development. I'm always here to help you with any questions you have and you'll be surprised with how little you need to stimulate your baby but all you need to build a positive and healthy foundation.

The nursery rhymes alongside are pretty fun too! (Yes I strongly encourage you to sing along!)

So Baby Massage is more than just stroking your baby. It helps with their physical, social and emotional development- all of which are super important in building foundations for a better future for your baby!
