What makes birth positive?

Let’s bust a few myths, shall we?

A positive birth doesn’t mean it has to be…

• Pain-free

• Vaginal

• Free from pain relief

• Without induction

• At home

• In a pool

• With a playlist in the background

• Surrounded by fairy lights and candles…

While all of those things can absolutely support a physiological birth and create a calm environment, they do not define whether a birth is positive or not.

Because here’s the truth:

A positive birth is not about how you gave birth — it’s about how you felt while giving birth.

Did you feel heard?

Were you informed?

Did you feel like the most important person in the room?

Did you feel supported, respected, and in control?

Were your choices truly your own — or did you feel pressured, coerced, or dismissed?

These are the questions that matter when we talk about a positive birth experience.

Because ultimately, it’s about you. How you felt during labour. How you feel when you reflect back on that day. How your experience shaped your story, your healing, your confidence — even your decision to grow your family again in the future.

You are not just a vessel.

You are not a background character to your baby’s birth.

You matter.

Your experience matters.

Birth is a huge deal, and however it unfolds — whether in a theatre, a pool, or on your living room floor — I hope you know that your feelings are valid, your voice is powerful, and your story is important.

A positive birth isn’t about perfection.

It’s about empowerment.

And you deserve nothing less.
