A- Z of doula support: C is for Continuity of Care

Why familiar support matters.

Continuity of care means having a familiar, trusted person alongside you throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

Birth is not just a physical process — it’s deeply emotional and hormonal. The presence of someone you know and trust can help the body stay relaxed, focused, and responsive.

A large Cochrane Review found that continuous labour support is associated with shorter labours, reduced intervention rates, and increased satisfaction with the birth experience (Bohren et al., 2017). Familiarity matters.

As a doula, I build a relationship with you before birth. I learn your hopes, fears, preferences, and values. This means that when labour begins, you’re not explaining yourself — you’re being supported.

Continuity also supports birth partners. Rather than feeling solely responsible, they are guided, reassured, and empowered. Together, we form a calm, connected support team around you.

In a system where care providers may change shifts or rotate frequently, continuity offers emotional stability and reassurance — something many parents don’t realise they’re missing until they experience it.

If you’re seeking consistent, personalised support throughout your journey, I’d love to support you.
